I’m playing catch up with my news. A story I couldn’t overlook last week was “Omaha’s weirdest tattoos.” A report by the Food and Drug Administration estimated that as many as 45 million Americans have tattoos. People are putting a lot of thought into getting pop culture tattoos, from Ralphie of “A Christmas Story” to TV’s popular characters including “ALF” and the “MASH” crew. For some, it’s a running competition to get the most outrageous tattoo. In the story, a 27-year-old personal trainer and professional fighter said he plans to get “The Golden Girls” inked on him. Along with the show’s tagline: “Thank You For Being A Friend.” OK. (Scratching my head.) As long as he’s happy with it, I guess, it works for me. The Women’s Fund of Omaha recently conducted a study with Omaha’s top female executives. Fourty-seven women spoke about the good and bad news about how far women have come in the world of business. They talked about learning to set goals and surpass them in male-dominated fields, taking on leadership roles at work, at home and in the community and running into unexpected roadblocks on their way to the top. The women also discussed work-life balance. A touchy subject for many moms, including me. (Click the headline to read more.) |

I just read an adorable wedding proposal story in the World-Herald today that’ll surely make you smile. A former Nebraska Husker running back and volleyball player plan to wed this month. They’re not just any ordinary couple, though. They have clout in this state. Roy Helu Jr. and Danielle Mancuso are planning an intimate ceremony for family and friends, although some former Husker football and volleyball players and members of Roy’s current team, the National Football League’s Washington Redskins, are invited. I read somewhere that the average couple spends $27,000 on their wedding. Gulp. One word comes to mind: Debt. I guess, that’s why I like to hear about the small, thrifty weddings. My cousin, for instance, limited the wedding and reception head-count to 50 people (which included the wedding party.) A friend of mine created a gorgeous autumn-themed wedding from materials she found at an everything-is-a-buck store. In Sunday’s World-Herald, Omahan Elizabeth Startzer shared how she found her wedding items (from vintage champagne glasses to centerpieces) at a thrift store. The story was a great reflection of the times. Brides are more conscious of their spending. Startzer was a smart, stylish shopper. She minimized wedding costs by making her own invitations and decorations thanks to Pinterest. (Click the headline to read more.) |

A roundup of morning news IN THE NEWS April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but the topic is a year-round job for Julie Medina, a deputy Douglas County attorney. She recently spoke to a group of high school students about rape. More moms want iPads for Mother’s Day. An Ohio mom used Facebook to punish her teen daughter. And a father chronicles how his 10-year-old autistic son was verbally abused by his school teachers. (Click the headline to read more.) |

AHH! Garage sales. It’s a great American tradition. Typically, starting in the summer, homeowners kick into active de-clutter mode, and garage sales are a great opportunity to make some extra cash, pass along unwanted treasures or simply create a social gathering for neighbors and friends. I don’t know how or why, but somehow I’ve been sucked into garage sale life. (Click the headline to read more and find a list of upcoming sales.) |

New parents leaving most Nebraska hospitals don’t get free infant formula anymore. Consumer advocates are pressuring hospitals nationwide to end such giveaways saying they undermine breastfeeding. According to a World-Herald article, Omaha’s Creighton University Medical Center (which is being acquired by Alegent Health System) still does it. But that might end, too. “Sounds a bit lopsided.” “Just do it.” “He’ll leave you.” The feedback I received from my “How I was almost tricked into marriage” blog last week was overwhelming — and appreciated. Since I was named momaha.com editor earlier this year, readers have asked me to post more personal blogs. I did. In the blog, I explained how my significant other Bobby has point-blank asked me to marry him — twice. On both occasions, I skirted the question. (Click the headline to read more.) |

I’m hot, sticky and orange. MTV’s “Jersey Shore” orange. Fist-pump-worthy orange. And I kind of like it. I didn’t lay in a tan booth, like I did when I was in my 20s. Skin cancer scares me. I recently went into a salon for an airbrushed spray tan. I’ve always wanted to get one, but thought they looked icky after day four. (Click the headline to read more.)

Spring is in the air, as are allergies — and they’re getting worse. My 15-month old daughter Gabriella’s nose won’t stop running. Solving a stubborn case of the sniffles has never been so trickier. At first, I thought she had pink eye. Last week, she woke up with one eye swollen shut. Then her boogies turned from clear to a citrus green-color. Gross, I know. Now she has a hybrid sneeze-cough that makes her sound like an old man hacking every time she clears her throat. I couldn’t tell if she had allergies or a lingering cold. That’s why I’m excited Dr. Colleen Hanna-Slagle, a pediatrics physician at OneWorld Community Health Centers in Omaha, wrote a guest blog to help parents decipher when their child has allergies. Sunday is Earth Day. So, now for the real question: How green do you think you are? No one ever looks in the mirror and sees a polluter. And you’re “greenness” isn’t something you can easily gauge. We thought of the perfect way to rank among your peers without outing you to the world. (Click the headline to read more.) |

On a recent night, I kicked off my heels, put on yoga pants and plopped onto the couch. My hubby, as I call Bobby, handed me a glass of red wine. I slopped a wet kiss on his cheek. “Are you going to marry me someday?” he asked. “Sure, how about Monday,” I joked. He didn’t say anything. My heart sank. I did it again. We’ve been together for seven years but aren’t married. We have two children: Alejandra, 3, and Gabriella, 14 months. Bobby has an 8-year-old son — whom I love as my own — from a previous relationship. Bobby sees the emotional, financial and spiritual benefits of marriage; I’m just not ready.
