After working as a professional esthetician in top spas for more than seven years, you see a lot of faces.
However, I’m particularly familiar with the skin struggles those of us in our 30′s face.
I’m a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom to a 3-year-old. When it comes to skincare, I get it.
At our age, we want to maintain our healthy, youthful skin.
Here are 10 tips I often share with my Unique Skincare Boutique clients to keep their skin glowing:
1. Wear sunscreen!
No excuses. Everyday. All day. Wear 30 SPF+. Sun damage (or ANY tan) is the leading cause of premature aging, wrinkles and sun spots.
2. Ditch the acne kits you buy at the mall and toss the apricot scrub.
Those harsh ingredients cause premature aging by micro-tearing the skin leaving it dull and dehydrated among many other things.
3. Invest in professional grade skincare products.
Don’t waste your money on the “new, cool products” that you see in the ads. They are mostly preservatives and fillers to make big companies profitable. When you look at the annual investment, for less money you can have quality skincare products that will produce results. Don’t forget the eye cream.
4. Exfoliate, but less often than you did in your 20’s.
Your skin gets thinner as you age and shouldn’t be stripped of its hydration and youth-preserving lipids. Exfoliate one to two times a week is appropriate. (Remember: follow it with a hydrating mask for extra awesomeness.)
5. Get regular facials.
Why? Aside from dozens of skin benefits and much needed relaxation, facials provide an opportunity for a professional to tell you how to take care of your skin. It’s a win-win. You wouldn’t skip a dental cleaning because you know how to brush your teeth?
6. Take time for yourself and your skin.
Being a mom or a career woman (or both) often leads us to put others first. Remember, you only have one face to the world and one chance to preserve its youth. Now is the time to start taking great care of it. At a minimum, wash your face twice daily, tone, moisturize, and sunscreen. Is 5 minutes twice a day too much to ask for beautiful, healthy skin?
7. Don’t pick at your acne.
Typically acne is a lot harder to deal with as an adult than as a teen. Thanks to changing hormones or a hectic lifestyle the little guys sprout up. Don’t use “the typical teenage products” because they’ll exacerbate the problem. See your esthetician or dermatologist for professional advice.
The more you keep the skin full of moisture the less damage will occur as you age (a.k.a. future wrinkles). A great pro-moisturizer and a hydrating serum is a must for those of us in our 30’s (even the oily skin types).
9. Get healthy.
Obligatory lifestyle tip: Drink lots of water, exercise, don’t smoke, eat fruits and veggies, avoid soda, and limit caffeine and alcohol. Lifestyle absolutely impacts your skin’s appearance.
10. Age gracefully.
Everyone ages — even Jennifer Anniston. We will all develop lines and furrows; aging is part of our existence, a rite of passage to embrace. However, with just a little (guided) effort we can prolong the youthfulness and health of our skin.
