Shake my sillies out. Gotta shake, shake, shake my sillies out.
Ah! We’re excited to announce this Friday’s momaha story time theme: Lions.
Carol Bicak, author of The World-Herald’s children’s book “The Littlest Lion”, will be our guest for the 7 p.m. reading at The Bookworm Bookstore, near 87th and Pacific Streets.
The lion-themed story time is the perfect opportunity for your kiddos to bring a cuddly jungle animal and wear their most comfy pajamas. Milk, cookies and a take-home lion craft will be provided.
Carol, an Omaha World Herald staff writer, has spent a great deal of time covering Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the lion cubs born there last December.
We caught up with Carol to ask her more about the children’s book. Here’s what she had to say:
Q. What inspired you to write this book?
A. Omaha’s zoo is part of my beat as a reporter for The World-Herald. After covering the lion cubs for several months, photographer Chris Machian and I decided to try writing a book about them.
Q. What are some of your favorite things to see at Omaha’s zoo?
A. I love all the big cats in the Cat Complex and the lemurs in Expedition Madagascar.
Q. What kind of stories do you typically cover for The World-Herald?
A. Mostly, I write community news as a Community Connection reporter, but I’m also cover the zoo, Joslyn Art Museum and books for the Features team.
Q. Who would be your dream author to meet?
A. I’ve gotten to meet quite a few through my job. I especially liked interviewing Jan Brett. I’m a mystery fan, so I would like to meet Sue Grafton or Kathy Reichs.
Q. How did the book come to get published?
A. The World-Herald publishes a few books every year. Up to now they’ve been books for adults on sports or war. My editor and I took the children’s book proposal to them and was surprised when they agreed.
Q. Are there any upcoming projects you’d like to share?
A.At work, I’m writing stories for our annual holiday gift guide. My two stories will focus on great books for gifts — one for adults and one for kids.
Danielle Herzog, a freelance writer and stay-at-home mom to two children, wrote this guest blog for momaha.
