It was announced yesterday that an arrest had been made in the Omaha murders of Dr. Roger Brumback, his wife Mary, Shirlee Sherman and Thomas Hunter.
Thomas Hunter was a sixth-grader when he was brutally murdered in March of 2008. He got off the school bus, walked into his house and was found dead later that evening.
In some respects, it’s personal.
Thomas Hunter went to school with my children. He attended King Science Magnet School and rode the same school bus as my youngest. He had been in the same fourth-grade classroom as my middle child.
Suddenly, I found myself not only explaining death to my tweens, but murder. I had to explain that some person was so mixed up, so twisted that he decided that a child did not deserve to live.
Not just any child, but someone they knew, someone they cared about, someone they valued.
Death and illness of a classmate, friend or family member can be explained to children. People get sick, sometimes they don’t get better, their body stops working and they die.
You can discuss the theologies of the afterlife and put the experience into perspective using the tenets of your faith and personal beliefs.
Even accidents can be explained.
But murder is different.
Murder is a deliberate act taken by one person to end the life of another. Murder is personal.
May the healing begin.
