The Burke Rockstars have made it to Chicago! Our chartered bus pulled out of the parking lot at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, and we passed the time with fun conversation, movies, snacks and a few naps.
I promise, if I could have successfully recorded the joyful shrieks, jumping up and down, and exuberant clapping that took place today, you would smile from ear to ear.
The overwhelming generosity of friends and strangers has allowed us to really make this a trip of a lifetime for our students and their families.
Tonight for dinner we dined at the Water Tower’s, foodlife café. Every person received a blank card and was allowed to choose anything, and I mean anything, they wanted to eat or drink. Some chose baby back ribs, stir-fry, pizza, turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, while others stuck with the standard hamburger and fries. The students’ reaction to the dessert station was almost as entertaining as their faces when we told them they could choose anything they wanted.
We made some local friends while dining; a phenomenon not uncommon when with the Rockstars. DJ, an employee of the food court, was extremely accommodating and interested in our story. We explained we would be back for dinner on Thursday evening. His response: “I don’t work Thursday, but I think I will come in anyway to see you all — you all inspire me.”
Yes DJ, they do!
Stay tuned for more snippets of adventure from the Rockstars in Chicago!
