My single most important fashion rule is to spend most of your clothing budget on the classics.
While they can often be expensive, you don’t need many. And they will last you a lifetime.
Don’t believe me?
Here is one little black dress — under $100 — all suited up for five decades worth of events. (See here for shopping info.)
This dress is perfect for teenage girls – especially if you are her mother. You love the fact that it doesn’t hug her cute teenage frame too much, and she’ll love that it’s comfortable even if she has to wear a dress. The cute scalloped, sling-back flats are mint colored, which is all the rage right now (just like it was when I was in middle school almost 30 years ago!) A matching patent belt is instantly transformed with a silk hair accessory. And what teenage girl is complete without her cute, coordinating iPhone case?
Now that you’re in your 20′s, you will want to step it up a notch. If you’re still in college attending sorority formals or are newly working, you are well-versed in heel walking. Scarves are popular at any age but they will add a flair of sophistication to any little black dress. Funky shoes and bright accessories are always ideal for the 20-something woman.
In your 30′s, you’ve had some time to develop your style. You are much more confident and unafraid to take risks – even if you’re supposed to be dressed like a lady. Add a bold-colored leather jacket and a contrasting clutch for visual interest. Go ahead and wear those unique shoes and accessories with your traditional black dress – here I’ve mimicked the “cage” look in both the shoes and the statement necklace.
If you’ve read this blog a time or two, you will know that I absolutely adore leopard-print shoes. They are so stylish right now and haven’t been out of style in years – if ever. (And hey, you can technically be a cougar by now, right?) Use your shoes and classic accessories in brighter, right-now colors to take your little black dress silhouette from fine to fabulous!
In your 50′s, you may want to give off a sophisticated and sleek vibe every time you dress up. You may also not be liking your arms so much by this age (or maybe it’s been a while.) Nonetheless, pair structured handbags, capped-toe pumps and nicely tailored jackets with your little black dress. Pearls are always classic and look even more on-trend when you layer them up. You’ll look fashion forward while you’re still gracefully aging.
