The “Rockstar ripple effect” is a term used to describe the wave of goodness, joy and miracles that spread from everything, anyone, or any circumstance that comes in contact with the Burke High Rockstars.
Most recently, the Rockstar ripple has created a tidal wave!
We are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of complete strangers who have heard our story, been inspired, and then shared it.
As soon as the story ran on momaha.com, and later published in the World-Herald’s Living section, money started rolling in.
I’ve been in contact with Toba Cohen-Dunning, executive director of the Omaha Schools Foundation, and as she reported, “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
As of Wednesday, March 6, $1,670 has been donated online and $2,327 was donated via mail or check. In addition, two of Omaha’s largest companies have said they want to help underwrite the trip.
Today, I proudly announce that the Rockstars are Chicago bound. We are certain we will have the funds to make the trip a reality.
In February, major cuts were made to the trip plan to leave us with the $5,200 gap. We had to cut all extra experiences like a trip to the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Art Institute, even tickets to ride the “El” (mass transit system) while downtown.
Now that we are certain of funding, we are able to book the trip by our March 15 deadline. With continued generosity and giving, we will be adding our extras back in to the itinerary.
Allow me to share a few stories from this past week that I’m certain will renew your faith in the kindness of the human spirit.
- Sarah (a former Rockstar photographed above) heard from her mom and dad that funds were still needed to make the Chicago trip a reality. Sarah’s spoken word is quiet, strained, and limited. But when she heard the story about her friends, she boldly told her parents, “I…have…money.” Tuesday morning, Sarah and her mom arrived in the Rockstar room with two checks- one from Sarah and one matched by her parents.
- The Burke Culinary Club took up a donation and brought $40 to the Rockstar room Tuesday morning.
- An international exchange student who attended Burke several years ago and is now living home in Spain, caught wind of the Rockstar story and made an online donation.
- Another student, who has extremely limited financial means, handed Miss M. two quarters and insisted it be added to the trip fund.
The Rockstar ripple effect is sweeping our community and bringing along with it hope, joy, and opportunity. Can you feel it?
I encourage you to follow their journey with us as an honorary Rockstar. I will be traveling with the group to Chicago and blogging, sharing photos, short videos, and stories from our adventures. I’d love it if you followed along on momaha.com
Be sure to check back and add a little Rockstar magic to your day.
