Josie Loza: School tomorrow? Decision could come later tonight
Josie Loza Omaha World-Herald

The Omaha Public Schools could make a decision tonight on whether classes will be held Friday, but the decision may also have to wait until morning.

“It will depend on how much snow falls, then it’s really going to come down to what we know from the city and the weather people,” said OPS spokesman David Patton. If school officials are unable to make a call tonight, the decision would come before 5 a.m., Patton said.

How many snow days are left?

Updated to include Thursday’s cancellations

• Bellevue — The district has about 90 extra hours built into its calendar and could miss several more days before having to make them up.

• Council Bluffs — The district builds in snow days as vacation days, then cancels the vacation days as needed. The district was to make up the Dec. 20 snow day on Thursday, which would have been a vacation day. A makeup day is scheduled for April 4. The Jan. 30 snow day is to be made up on April 5.

• Elkhorn — The district has enough extra instructional time built into its calendar that it wouldn’t have to start making up days until it had missed five or six days. If school were canceled Friday, Elkhorn would reschedule kindergarten roundup.

• Gretna — The district has scheduled about 100 hours more than required by state law, so the number of days missed would need to be in the double digits before the district would have to make them up.

• Lincoln — The district can still take two additional snow days without adding time back.

• Millard — The district will already be making up snow days on May 23 and 24. Thursday and any further snow days would have to be made up after Memorial Day. Graduating seniors would be exempt.

• Omaha — OPS elementary schools built in a four-day cushion and still has one left before makeup days are needed. Secondary schools have a larger cushion.

• Papillion-La Vista — The district has enough instructional time in the calendar that it doesn’t have to make up every day lost to snow. The school will make up one day on May 23. The superintendent has discretion on whether to make up additional days. If more makeup days are needed, the district has reserved May 24 and March 25.

• Ralston — The district has already postponed the last day of school to May 24 because of snow days. Additional snow days (including Thursday) will be added to the end of the school year.

• Westside — Westside is not planning to extend its school year at this time. The district has enough instruction time built in that students would have to miss quite a bit of school — seniors, five days — before the district would have to make up days.
