The Omaha Public Library will celebrate the accomplishments and history of African-Americans during February, which is Black History Month. Programs will be offered that share the impact of African-Americans.
Here is a sampling of the free events:
» Visit the Michael Phipps Gallery at the W. Dale Clark Library, 215 S. 15th St., to see a monthlong exhibition of art from the Great Plains Black History Museum and University of Nebraska at Omaha professor Wanda Ewing.
» Watch Black History Month movies at 1 p.m. Saturdays at the South Omaha Library, 2808 Q St.
» Enjoy live music, an overview of the history of Sankofa and how to apply its principles in daily life at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Charles B. Washington Library, 2868 Ames Ave. The Sankofa Ensemble will perform.
» Join the Teen Hangout and discuss teen urban fiction at 4 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Swanson Library, 9101 West Dodge Road.
» See two episodes of the PBS series “African American Lives,” and learn about tracing family roots and using the library’s genealogical resources at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Washington Library.
» Join storyteller Idu Maduli at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Benson Library, 6015 Binney St., as he gives a summary of black history through stories.
