Danielle Herzog: The Sassy Housewife: My day as a model
Danielle Herzog Omaha World-Herald

It was a day that all little girls pretend to have when they are young.

A day when you can dress up, get your hair and makeup done and pretend you are a model for three glorious hours.

The Sassy Housewife photo shoot was that day for me.

The Sassy Housewife is weekly Saturday advice column on Momaha.com that I write. I’ll cover the adventures in housewifery — from parenting, entertaining and recipes to the interests of a been-there-done-that and somewhat-know-it-all wife.

The photo shoot was our opportunity to capture the iconic 1950’s housewife and bring her to life in our real worlds today.

And — WOW — was it an adventure!

I started my day meeting stylist Rebecca Forsyth of Bungalow 8. The moment I saw her top bun and cat eyes, I knew she was the woman for the job.

She transformed my makeup-less face to a page out of history.

She used pin curls to get that feminine, romantic, stylish look I was going for. In short, soft, naturally wavy hair. It was amazing.

Following my salon appointment, I met the women of Hello Holiday, a social shopping site based in Omaha that specializes in the retro apparel experience.

Megan Hunt and Sarah Lorsung Tvrdik brought several dresses from their spring collection to show me. I loved the allure of trying on clothes that could instantly change your look and make you feel ready to take on the world.

Every detail from the black-and-tan buckled pumps to the citrus twist clip-on earrings was thought out, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

And then the World-Herald photographer Jim Burnett began snapping photos.

We all laughed at the scenarios I posed for, such as answering letters like Dear Abby with a martini in my hand and looking perfectly coifed for a tea party with stuffed animals.

It was as though we were looking at motherhood through a photographer’s lens.

Although I could never actually wear those heels all day in my mom-life, I loved that for a few hours I got the chance to feel like a model.

Thank you to all those who helped make that look and my dream day possible.
