As we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. today, here a few events and locations you might want to check out today in honor of him, his dream and how important other famous Black Americans were in all of our lives.

{1} Make today a day of service.

Metropolitan Community College students will celebrate King by giving back to the community through the fifth annual “A Day On, Not a Day Off” service event from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. More than 300 students and staff will volunteer for 60 community organizations including Strategic Air and Space Museum, Goodwill, HELP Adult Services, Habitat for Humanity Omaha ReStore, Open Door Mission, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, Council Bluffs Fire Department and others.

{2} Go to the Loves Jazz & Art Center.

The educational institute at 2510 N. 24th St. celebrates the many accomplishments of African-Americans of the past and present. During the 1930s and ’40s, Omaha had a booming jazz scene. Learn more about it through gallery talks, interactive storytelling, workshops and lectures. www.lovesjazzartcenter.org/

{3} Visit the Malcolm X birthsite.

The house no longer exists, but a monument marks civil rights leader Malcolm X’s birthplace in north Omaha. The grassy 12-acre area at 3448 Pinkney St. is open to the public at no charge. Call before visiting: 800-645-9287 or www.malcolmxfoundation.org

{4} Visit the Storz Pavilion.

Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing will present “Are YOU living the dream?” at noon in the Storz Pavilion as part of University of Nebraska Medical Center’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration. Free pizza will be served.

{5} Celebrate Black History on stamps.

View stamps of famous Black Americans on display at the Leon Myers Stamp Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boys Town Visitors Center, 137th Street and West Dodge Road.
