Who says you’ve got to have something new and sparkly to slip into this New Year’s Eve?
Why not play up your natural, everyday gifts instead?
A few great makeup tricks can be an easy way to shine without the hassle of panty hose that squeeze or finally figuring out how to wear a bra with that backless dress.
1. Lips – When time and/or skill is in short supply, go red. You can get away with very little make-up when you’ve got bold, red lips. Throw on a few coats of mascara to brighten eyes and find your perfect shade (which can be the hardest part of this make-up trick.)
For fair skin tones, choose a coral-y red and skip the gloss. Try Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice, $8 or YSL Rouge Volupté in No. 16, $34.
For medium skin tones, anything in the pinky-cranberry to true red tones will work with your gold undertones. Try CoverGirl TruShine Lipcolor in Valentine Shine, $7.50 or Rouge Dior Lipstick in Red Premiere, $28.
For darker skin tones, go deep and rich. Warm brick red or bergundy are best and won’t be too harsh like brighter shades. Try Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Smoky Rouge, $29 or L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Red Rhapsody, $9.

2. Eyes – Don’t feel comfortable with shocking lips? Play up eyes instead with that smokey evening look.
Not sure how? Pick a multi-tonal eye-shadow pallette and follow this simple tutorial from Chanel’s creative director, Peter Phillips. And keep your lipstick to a pale pink or nude shade so it’s not competing with your sexy eyes.

3. Face, Eyes & Lips – Play up eyes with a shimmery shadow while keeping cheeks dewey and lips plump with pink.
Line both upper and lower lashes with black liner. Smudge lower liner for a smokey look, and use a shimmery white shadow from lid to brow bone. Try Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Fantasme or SmokyShadowBlast in Onyx/Smoke. Use blush with a very fine shimmer. (For best results, use this trick. Squeeze or paint cream blush onto the pad of your palm at the base of thumb. Blot both palms together, smile and use pads to blot blush lightly onto the apples of your cheeks.) Choose a pale berry lip stain, dab gloss onto the middle of your bottom lip and Voila!

4. Face, Eyes & Lips – For darker skin tones, go for the gold! Line eyes with black liner and be sure the lower lash line is dramatic. Finish with gold shadow and fruit juicy-colored lipstick. Dab a little gold shadow into the center of lips with your fingertip for a gloss-like effect that isn’t sticky.
