‘A Christmas Carol’ at Omaha Community Playhouse

It just isn’t Christmas without “A Christmas Carol.” Experience one of Omaha’s favorite holiday traditions as Ebenezer Scrooge takes us on a life-changing journey filled with beautiful costumes, exquisite music, well-crafted sets and special effects.

Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops

Activities will include opportunities to play with slot cars, remote-control trucks, model trains and more. Adding to the fun will be this year’s new addition — a talking caribou. Participants will have an opportunity to write a letter to Santa, make and purchase a Cozy Critter stuffed animal, take part in free crafts and get a free 4×6 photo with Santa.

‘Christmas Presence’

Step into the past and experience the elegance of an authentic Victorian Christmas. The theme, “Christmas Presence,” is based on “A Christmas Carol,” written by Charles Dickens during the 19th century. More than 20 trees will be decorated in Victorian splendor, many carrying the story’s theme.

ConAgra Foods Arts for the Holidays Celebration

Omaha Performing Arts, the Omaha Symphony, Opera Omaha and the Omaha Community Playhouse are teaming up for this event, which features a food drive. Gingerbread at the Tabernacle

Gingerbread Festival

Holidays at the Historic General Crook House

Homemade Holiday Fruitcakes

Baked by volunteers in the hospital kitchen, the Alegent Health Midlands Hospital Auxiliary gourmet fruitcakes are made from the same annual secret recipe. Each cake is filled with pecans, dates, pineapple and cherries.

Christmas at Union Station Tree Lighting Ceremony

Ethnic Holiday Trees Exhibit

Another holiday favorite returns to Union Station. The Ethnic Holiday Trees exhibit is one of the enduring fixtures of the event and showcases how cultures from around the world celebrate the Christmas season. Each tree is decorated by a local Omaha ethnic group and is accompanied by interpretative text explaining the meaning behind the various decorations and unique traditions within each culture.

Holiday Poinsettia Show

More than 5,600 poinsettia plants are grown in Lauritzen Gardens’ greenhouses for this annual holiday show. This spectacular exhibit includes a 20-foot poinsettia tree, beautifully decorated holiday trees, antique sleighs, model trains and other festive decorations. Be enchanted by model trains whirring through this breathtaking indoor floral display.

Everyone’s favorite schoolgirl in the bright yellow hat is back for some festive fun in France. Madeline, friends and teacher Miss Clavel are all looking forward to the holidays. Santa’s Magic at Omaha’s Children’s Museum

New this year, this Santa experience is unlike any other. Step into a cozy living room and be dazzled by a holiday light show featuring the music of Mannheim Steamroller. A visit from the beautiful Snow Queen prepares the children for a special visit from Santa, who comes down the chimney spreading good cheer and talking about the spirit of the season. This visit with Santa is extra special because he knows every child’s name. Pictures with Santa will be available with purchase.

‘Who Killed Santa?’

Check out this holiday whodunit. Santa is hosting his annual holiday party attended by Frosty, Tiny Tim, the Little Drummer Boy and Rudolph, who all have a bone to pick with Santa. After tempers flare, Santa ends up with a candy cane through the heart. No one will confess, no one can leave, and Christmas is in jeopardy. Sponsored by Omaha Steaks.

Boys Town Historic Crèche Displays

Take a driving tour of Boys Town this holiday season and view three Nativity scenes. The main crèche adorns the Music Hall on Flanagan Boulevard, near the main entrance off West Dodge Road. This large Nativity scene was created by the late Donia Temple — a Holocaust survivor and former Boys Town employee. Other Nativities are located at Dowd Memorial Catholic Chapel on Dowd Drive, and on Heroes Boulevard, in front of the Village Christmas tree across from the Skip Palrang Field House.

Festival of Christmas Scholarship Concert

The annual concert benefits the Grace University scholarship fund. Grace University musicians will be joined by the Columbus High School Concert Choir.

The Sarpy Serenaders, a barbershop chorus, will present its 13th annual Christmas program. The serenaders open with secular music such as “White Music” and “Jingle Bells,” but then the emphasis moves to sacred music. The event also will feature various church choirs, with an audience singalong.

The Nutcracker

The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet returns to the Orpheum with an awe-inspiring take on a cherished holiday tradition. Children of all ages will delight in this sumptuous production with its magnificent sets, dazzling special effects and cirque-style aerialists. More than 60 dancers, actors and circus artists, including local Omaha-area youth, will mix traditional ballet elements with astounding creativity to bring Tchaikovsky’s whimsical holiday classic to life.

Christmas in Calhoun

The second annual event includes Christmas at the Frahm House, Winter Wonderland at the Washington County Museum, a Christmas costume fun run, a Santa photo op for pets, a chili feed with Santa, a kids Christmas shop, cookie decorating and a tree-lighting ceremony.

WHEN: Dec. 8. Events begin at 9 a.m.

WHERE: Events are at various sites in Fort Calhoun. Look for the signs along 14th Street (Highway 75).

Come See the Light

This drive-through living nativity depicts all the sights, sounds and scents of the birth of Christ. Complimentary refreshments will be served inside afterward.

WHEN: 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9.

WHERE: Faith Christian Church, 2210 S. 132nd St.

ADMISSION: Free.

Holiday Air Affair!

Get your picture taken while sitting with Santa in our FB-111 Fighter Jet. Also see a lighting of one of the aircraft. Kids can decorate cookies or gingerbread airplanes.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Dec. 8. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: Strategic Air & Space Museum. Take Interstate 80, Exit 426 near Ashland.

ADMISSION: $12 adults, $6 children (ages 4 to 12); free for members. Active retired military and seniors (65 and older) $11.
