The comic book fan in your life needs somewhere to put his drink, too.

With items from the home improvement store and some Mod Podge — a quick-drying paste that will seal the coasters — you’ll have a great gift (or maybe you’ll decide to keep it for yourself).

We modified this idea slightly from the Mod Podge Rocks blog. It’s a pretty simple, quick way to make some vintage-looking drink coasters.

COMIC BOOK COASTERS

Supplies

Round, blank electrical covers (find them in the electrical section of a home improvement or hardware store)

Comic books (we found some cheap ones in the 25-cent bin at a comic store, but any comic you like will do)

Mod Podge (available at any craft store)

Water

Paint brush

Scissors

Pencil

Directions

Find an image you like on one of the comic pages. Use one of the round blanks to trace a circle around the image with a pencil. Cut it out.

Place the cut out in a little bit of water to get it damp. With your brush, apply some Mod Podge to the blank. Take the wet cut-out and put it on the blank. Smooth it out so no bubbles or creases are on the image. (The cut-out may look see-through right now, but that will go away when it dries.) Repeat steps 1 and 2 for as many coasters as you are making

After they have dried (15-20 minutes), apply a layer of Mod Podge to the top of each coaster. Let it dry and apply another coat. (If you like, you can apply several coats. The Mod Podge layer will thicken, but it will still be clear.)

Take the foam or rubber gasket from each blank and glue it to the bottom of the coaster for padding. We used super glue, but a hot-glue gun or other permanent glue would work, too.
