Pumpkins don’t need to just sit bare on your front step. Put them to work by making them into planters.
Renee Lincoln of Omaha saw this idea on a magazine cover and thought it would be a good alternative to jack-o’-lanterns as a fall decoration. Lincoln’s grandchildren helped her, scooping out the pumpkins and proudly presenting their own planters to their parents.
Supplies
Pumpkins (good size, make sure the depth will support the mum plant)
Potted mum
Scoop and cutting utensils
Directions
Cut the top off of the pumpkin, as for a jack-o’-lantern, taking care not to cut the hole too big. It might be a good idea to measure the pot before you cut.
Scoop out the inside of the pumpkin and place the potted mum inside. Water as needed.
After the pumpkin season is done and the first freeze plant the mum in your garden.
