The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium hit an all-time high attendance record of 1,614,843 on Oct. 26, 2012.
This surpassed its previous record of 1,602,831 set in 1995.
To celebrate, the zoo will offer a Thank You Free Day on Sunday.
Admission will be free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Zoo officials said the record breaking year can be attributed to a few new changes the zoo experienced in 2012 which include: the newly renovated Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium, new Prehistoric Play Park and Fossil Dig Site, a new Guest Services building that separates Ticketing and Redemption for faster, more efficient entry and additional parking.
The recent ranking by TripAdvisor naming Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium the No. 1 Zoo in the country, pleasant weather throughout the year with a low amount of rainfall, and significant births such as Bailey, the giraffe calf, Biscuit, the zebra foal, and Tank the sea lion pup also helped.
