Josie Loza: Boys need great clothes, too
Josie Loza Omaha World-Herald

For the life of me, I can’t tell you why I still buy Little Bobby, 8, white shirts.

He’s spaghetti-sauce-around-the-lips messy. He plays hard and wears his pants until the knees blow out.

The challenge with having a little boy is finding quality clothes.

At least pink ruffles and sparkle hides the imperfections of a girl’s dress. Boys clothes isn’t so easily masked.

I have a network of friends who share boys clothing tips from which brands to buy and when items go on sale.

And, today, we’re raving about the Wes and Willy end-of-the-season warehouse sale at 1701 N. 24th St.

Most of the Omaha-based high-end boys clothing company is designed and screen-printed at the warehouse. It’s then sent overseas to be manufactured and shipped back to Omaha to be distributed to its buyers.

Locally, Von Mauer sells the Wes and Willy line of graphic tees, jeans, jackets, school uniforms and sportswear. Bloomingdales is one of the national retailers.

Founder Bill Mullen, who started the Omaha company in 1989, recently told the Omaha World-Herald the sale is a way for Omaha residents to see what the company’s all about.

The warehouse sale is this Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the north Omaha warehouse.

Normally, Wes and Willy jeans sell for about $50 and shirts $40. Clothes will be discounted up to 70 percent off.

WHAT DO WE LIKE ABOUT WES AND WILLY?
It’s a line of clothing that knows fashion, how boys wear and tear.

WHY IS THE BRAND CALLED WES AND WILLY?
It’s named after life long friends, Wes and Willy.

WHERE DO THEY PULL INSPIRATION FOR THEIR DESIGNS?
Simply from seeing boys being boys around the country. Besides, Wes and Willy say it best, “Boys need great clothes, too.”

A NOTE FROM BILL MULLEN (ahem, Willy):

“I’ve been in the fashion world since 1989, designing men’s wear and selling to shops up and down the coasts. But when it came to buying the right clothes for my sons, Ryan and Jack, I couldn’t find them. So I started making my own.”

Mullen was a key designer of Leggoons, a wildly popular swimwear line in the ’80s.

Twenty years and millions of garments later, a few things he’s learned:
- Boys love dogs, sports, rock and roll
- Soft. Keep it soft.
- Make it to last. For years.

“If I’m doing my job right, when you get your hands on a Wes and Willy garment, you’ll be holding a classic boy’s garment he won’t want to take off.”

CELEBRITIES HAVE TAKEN NOTICE OF THE BRAND.

Wes and Willy clothes have been spotted on the children of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mark Wahlberg, Kate Hudson and even in major motion pictures, such as “The Sixth Sense.”

And, most recently, Kim Kardashian. Her nephew Mason Dash Disick wore a pair of Wes and Willy lobster trunks.
