Days before Super Bowl XLVI, several reporters gathered to talk shop. Many of us considered ways to entertain and engage our readers with football coverage — from photos of children in jerseys to party tips.
And then the Lingerie Football League was mentioned.
If you’re not familiar with the MTV2 sports show, let me fill you in. You’ll get an eyeful watching it. The 30-minute broadcast features buxom young women playing tackle football in tight boy shorts, fringe-cut sports bras, shoulder pads, garters and small helmets with clear plastic visors.
Teams are based in major cities such as Los Angeles, Baltimore and Las Vegas. I wrote about the league a year or so ago. A Facebook group, titled “Bring Lingerie Football to Omaha,” was created. But you can tell by clicking on the link that it didn’t garner many hits or followers.
In the story meeting, I tried explaining the league but was at a loss for words.
“It’s basically a bunch of women playing football in their panties.”
But the league is much more than that.
The league has a faithful following — mostly men in their 20s to late 40s. A few women tune in out of curiosity. The league hosts a “Lingerie Bowl” which was televised Sunday live to millions around the world. This year, players took the field inside the New Orleans Arena.
Some question whether the league is a novelty or a serious sport. I guess that’s your call.
But I will tell you that the league is serious about their talent. Most of the female players are tough. Some of the hard hits sound and look pretty brutal on playbacks.
I spoke with several sports guys who said “it was really boring.” Humph. Getting men to talk about the subject was like pulling teeth. I’m sure it didn’t help that their wives ears perked up a bit.
I laughed. It was a loaded question. But I’m still curious… What do you think of the league?
