Veronica Daehn: Letting kids watch TV

Today’s Mom Daily is written by Omaha mom Ashli Brehm.

We’ve got a little bit of a situation at our house.

It all started so innocently. I’ll never forget the first morning I walked out to find my husband and 1-year old son doing the Hot Dog Dance.

OK. Kids watch Saturday morning TV, I told myself. Then, over the next year, I prided myself on only having the set on for two half-hour morsels of Mickey. One before breakfast. One after nap.

Oh, how smug I must have seemed. My child watches less TV than the average child!

And slowly, a show became a reward. A Mickey here, a Sesame there. What’s the harm? I watched TV as a kid. And he just adores that little mouse and his house…

But.

We’ve reached the point of no return, my friends. After the arrival of our second bouncing baby boy, the TV has literally become the boob tube at our house. In the first three months following the arrival of number 2, anytime I have had to tend to the feeding of and pumping for our infant, our toddler asked for a show.

And in the first 6 weeks, I acquiesced.

But now … eeek … I am in a baaaad place. How do I know? Example 1: Me: Hey, B, let’s go outside and play! It’s beautiful! B: No. Watch show. Example 2: Me: OK, B, we’ve watched two shows, the TV is getting turned off. B: Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! Example 3: Me: B, where did you learn about jump roping? Who has a jump rope? B: My friends! Me: Which friends? B: Minnie and Daisy.

So, now on top of all the other things I feel guilty about as a mom, I can add the fact that my child thinks Mickey and Co. are his friends and that he has a TV addiction. Sigh.

Ashli Brehm is married with two children. She is a stay at home mom.

He could have worse friends than Minnie and Daisy. They are pretty hot. :)

I can totally relate. We don’t have cable, but we have netflix and some days it takes up more than it’s fair share of my toddlers time. I have a Caillou addict!!! Who knew a little bald headed boy could steal my little girls heart away!! :)
